I would completely agree with all of these, they're amazing! I personally play the viola, yet my boyfriend plays the bassoon and I am very fond of the bassoon myself. I can't help but also enjoy the bassoon solo at the beginning of mvmt. 3 of william walton's viola concerto ;] because the line that the bassoon has is imitated by the viola when the viola comes in some measures later. and, as corny as this will sound, I really like the funny bassoon parts in dukas' the sorcerer's apprentice and in a similar vein uranus from the planets......bassoon and especially contra when put into these situations never fails to make me giggle to myself....that's in a good way!

One of the best books of orchestral excepts that does include the Shostakovich 9th Symphony is the Righini Book available I believe from Trevco Music. You could also begin collecting copies of orchestral parts. I started this in High School as so many parts are rental only. As far as the Rite of Spring it is far less difficult than Tschaikowsky 6th, where you can sometimes have the Double Basses wobbling on their E's and B's and you absolutely have to nail that first low e on the money.

that's funny, I wrote a poem about my bassoon and it kind of sounds like I'm talking about an intimate relationship. lol I guess that's how passionate Bassoonists are... despite the fact that it sounds wrong. lol
