My name is Rachel and I play the bassoon — as you might’ve guessed.
In the fall I will begin my junior year as a bassoon performance major at the Eastman School of Music, and also as an English major with a concentration in creative writing at the University of Rochester. (Yeah, don’t ask me what I’m going to do when I graduate… grad school is definitely in my future!)
I currently study bassoon with John Hunt and as of this summer will be playing on a Fox 660. My teacher is AMAZING! I’m really blessed to be able to work with him. When I actually get my hands on my new bassoon, I hope I can say similar things.
Just in case you want some technical information.
My favorite book is Vladimir Nabokov’s Lolita. I like mechanical pencils with 0.5 lead. My favorite shoes are ballet flats.
My first great musical experience was playing pit orchestra for my high school’s version of The Mikado, so I think it’s a fun “coming full circle” kind of thing that my first job is playing light opera for a summer. Unfortunately, OLO isn’t playing Mikado, but they are performing HMS Pinafore and Fiddler on the Roof, so it should be good times.
Okay…. that’s probably enough. Enjoy reading!
wow. this is amazing.
Hi!
You should definitely update this more often! I google ‘bassoon reed turban’ looking for a new way to wrap my reeds, and I stumbled upon your blog. You’ve got really interesting things to say, and I don’t get annoyed with poor grammar, because yours in fantastic! Haha, just thought I’d let you know that I enjoyed your blog.
Hey, I too stumbled upon your blog and found it quite entertaining. I have a daughter in school band who plays oboe and my younger one just started playing bassoon but…. she has to tote that thing on the bus to school everyday. (she is small) Do you have any suggestions for strap on wheels, some sort of foldable cart, etc. I’ve checked out a few cases with wheels but they are pricey. Any advice would be appreciated.
